GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: The Vice President of Institutional Advancement reports to and partners with Dr. Bobby Hall, President of Wayland Baptist University.  The Vice President will be a dynamic fundraising and advancement leader who is devoted to advancing faith-based higher education.  The successful candidate will be an engaging collaborator who will establish productive working relationships with the President, executive team, and members of the Board of Trustees, as well as deans, faculty, and staff.  In partnership with President Hall, this leader will create and execute a strategic fundraising plan to advance the University’s vision and strategic plan.  The successful candidate will build a high-performing advancement program that is focused on increasing philanthropic revenue through individual, corporate, and foundation giving. This leader will also supervise the creation and execution of strategic plans designed to advance the institution through focused and effective marketing and communications, alumni relations, and the university’s two museums.


  • Serve as the administrative liaison to the Board of Trustees’ Institutional Advancement Committee.
  • Serve as a member of the President’s Cabinet.
  • Advise the President regarding the status of all areas for which administrative oversight has been assigned.
  • Articulate and advance the mission and vision of Wayland Baptist University.
  • Provide vision, leadership, and oversight to the following areas:
    • Development
    • Alumni Relations
    • Marketing and Communications
    • Museums
  • Create and execute a strategic fundraising plan with clearly defined goals, time frames, and metrics/measurement.
  • Review and approve recommendations of area administrators with respect to appointments, promotions, terminations, leaves of absence, and salaries.
  • Define the roles, responsibilities, expectations, and objectives of the Office of Institutional Advancement to staff, student workers, and volunteers.
  • Create and execute a data-driven, highly relational major gifts program.
  • Increase philanthropic revenue from individuals, corporations, and foundations.
  • Prepare division budgets and monitor and ensure fiscal responsibility in all operations.
  • Draft and monitor policies and procedures related to gifts, endowments, grants, alumni relations, marketing and communications, and museums.  
  • Organize and conduct all institutional fundraising for campaigns, operating support, facilities, equipment, and endowments.
  • Coordinate and recommend to the President and Cabinet priorities for all special solicitations by and for faculty members, department chairpersons, division heads, deans, administrators, or others.
  • Supervise the receipting, recording, and acknowledging of all gifts and grants received by the University.
  • Coordinate all donor relations for the University and its divisions and departments.
  • Develop individual, corporate, and foundation major donor prospects utilizing prospect identification, and research (Raiser’s Edge).
  • Develop and maintain reference sources for fundraising, prospect research, and professional development, including all phases of donor qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship
  • Provide administrative direction for the execution of the division’s responsibilities in Wayland’s strategic enrollment marketing plan with clearly defined goals, time frames, and metrics/measurement.
  • Provide administrative direction for the maintenance of alumni records; act as a liaison between officers of the alumni association, alumni chapters, alumni events, and publications.
  • Provide administrative direction for all University publications and marketing related to institutional advancement initiatives.
  • Be an active member of the Plainview community, represent the University in church, civic, and community activities as requested.
  • Supervise, coach, and mentor institutional advancement staff toward the achievement of goals.
  • Actively participate in the life and events of the University. 
  • Other duties as assigned by the President.

A bachelor’s degree is required and a master’s degree is very strongly preferred (in a discipline or professional area represented at WBU).  The attainment of a doctorate or terminal degree will be highly valued.  Five (5) years of successful fundraising experience is preferred with two (2) years at a senior administrative level with successful experience in the areas of supervision of employees, budgetary oversight, strategic planning, and accountability.  Experience in human relations and leadership is essential as well as being a practicing Christian (preferably Baptist or similar faith heritage). Senior-level administrative experience in a college/university is preferred.

Experience, Knowledge, and Skills:

The successful candidate should have exceptional organizational, planning, analytical and project management skills.  They should be excellent oral and written communicators with documented success in soliciting and closing major gifts.  A strong work ethic and the ability to work constructively with diverse constituencies is important.  Demonstrating emotional intelligence, the ability to anticipate challenges, and utilizing keen judgment will be essential.  A motivated, self-starting conceptualizer will be most successful.  Significant travel is required.
