Job Summary:  The Technical Support Specialist is responsible for managing and administering the University’s personal computer systems and lab environments, including all related hardware and software. Responsibilities include providing professional support to end users, performing testing and developing installation plans for new applications and operating systems versions, management of yearly technology refresh projects, as well as supervising student workers who assist the IT Services department.

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited University or at least three years of directly related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Job Summary – The Technical Support Specialist is responsible for managing and administering the University’s personal computer systems and lab environments, including all related hardware and software. Responsibilities include providing professional support to end users, performing testing and developing installation plans for new applications and operating systems versions, management of yearly technology refresh projects, as well as supervising student workers who assist the IT Services department.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.

  1. Responsible for the installation, maintenance, repair, and performance of all university computer systems.
  2. Ensure proper licensing of all computer hardware and software.
  3. Maintain an accurate inventory of all computer hardware and software.
  4. Handle problem recognition, research, isolation, resolution, and follow-up for routine user problems.
  5. Perform network troubleshooting to isolate, diagnose, and fix PC related network
  6. Plan large annual technology refresh projects and effectively communicates changes to stakeholders.
  7. Advise users on appropriate software use; provide training on the use of new or existing computer
  8. Contact vendors to request service regarding defective products or services.
  9. Evaluate, recommend, and thoroughly test software upgrades and computer hardware replacements to ensure ease of use and compatibility.
  10. Evaluate, recommend, and obtain quotes for hardware needed in campus departments.
  11. Utilize a ticketing system to record issues and track resolutions.
  12. Professionally communicate technical information to end users via email, phone, and in-person.
  13. Coordinate with the Systems Administrator to ensure security and compliance of campus systems.
  14. Apply listening skills, work under pressure, address conflict, solve problems and make sound judgements.
  15. Stay informed of industry trends and all applicable technologies, including, security issues.
  16. Maintain positive working relationships with faculty, staff, students and vendors.
  17. Work cooperatively with other IT staff members, perform other duties as assigned by the AVP for IT.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities – This job supervises student workers as assigned by the AVP of IT.

Experience with Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager, endpoint antivirus and malware solutions, and computer imaging applications preferred.

Required Licenses and Certificates – The employee must be at least 21 years of age and have a valid Texas Driver’s License to drive any vehicle, including their personal vehicle, on behalf of the University.
