Job Summary: This position is responsible, under the direction of the President and Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs of Union University, for the overall operations of the Memphis College of Urban and Theological Studies (MCUTS). The Dean will provide vision, leadership, management, and strategic direction for every aspect of the college’s operations, and develop and administer the college’s budget, curriculum, objectives, and compliance with university and accreditation standards and policies. The Dean will also engage in direct fund-raising efforts as well as grant solicitation and management in consultation with the university’s institutional advancement office. Further, this position involves marketing and enrollment management, facilities management, and student safety in consultation with the appropriate departments of the university. The dean also hires, supervises, and mentors senior-level personnel within the college.

Essential Job Duties:

  1. In consultation with the president and the provost, direct the development, strategic planning, implementation, assessment, administration and continuous improvement of all academic curricula and programs, support services and administrative functions of the college.
  2. Assure compliance with university policies, state and federal regulations, and requirements of accreditation agencies.
  3. Supervise the work of senior college administrators, faculty, and staff who administer the instructional, fiscal, and student programs of the college.
  4. Advance research, scholarly and creative activity, and service within the college, in keeping with institutional initiatives and resources.
  5. Teach six (6) credit hours each academic year.
  6. Develop and implement long-range objectives, short-term goals, and strategic plans to meet the needs of the college.
  7. Develop and present the college budget for approval and administer the overall college budget to provide for the implementation of the stated annual goals and objectives.
  8. Foster relationships with businesses, churches, the community, and alumni to advance the college’s vision, curriculum, and strategic goals. Develop and strengthen relationships with the Tennessee Baptist Convention and the Midsouth Baptist Association (MSBA).
  9. Provide leadership in the hiring of faculty, instructional staff, and support staff for the college. Plan staffing needs and organizational structures. Make recommendations to the Provost/VPAA on faculty appointments, reappointments, promotion, tenure, and termination.
  10. Advance excellence in teaching by supporting, encouraging and managing the development and evaluation of faculty, adjunct instructors, and instructional staff. Ensure that non-faculty staff are provided with development opportunities.
  11. Openly and effectively communicate with faculty, staff, and students to foster an environment which strongly encourages learning by students, professional growth by faculty, and person-centered relationships among faculty and between students and faculty.
  12. In collaboration with the Office of Institutional Advancement, lead and support fundraising efforts for the school and university.
  13. Collaborate with another college/school deans and serve as an active member on the Academic Deans’ Council. Work together with the Dean for the School of Theology and Missions in the administration of theological and ministry educational programs at MCUTS.
  14. Perform other duties as assigned by the Provost/VPAA and the President.

Required Qualifications:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a terminal degree in an academic discipline appropriate to the college. Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated expertise in fields related to the college’s degree programs and at least 3-5 years of administrative and teaching experience. The successful candidate for this position must be a self-starter with a high degree of motivation, energy, and flexibility; skilled in the use of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other Microsoft Office technology; able to handle multiple projects in a dynamic college environment; and have a strong commitment to customer service.
