The School of Visual and Performing Arts at Oklahoma Baptist University invites applications for an Assistant or Associate Professor of Theatre.  The successful candidate will enhance the work of the School of Visual and Performing Arts by expert teaching, effective recruitment of talented undergraduate theatre students, production of multiple theatrical events each year, and resourceful and innovative collaboration with faculty and staff in service to the School of Visual and Performing Arts.  
Essential Functions
  • Lead all aspects of OBU Theatre in accordance with the academic standards and mission of OBU, including the selection, development, production, and promotion of each theatre season and management of all related resources
  • Teach courses in the undergraduate theatre curriculum specifically pertaining to acting, theatre history, etc. as listed in the Academic Catalog,, as well as additional courses, as needed, in the Division of Communication Arts 
  • Direct 2-3 main stage production each year including regular musical productions in collaboration with the Division of Music 
  • Lead search for adjuncts and provide oversight of adjuncts and contracted designers/professionals
  • Recruit, audition, and award scholarships to students who will pursue a theatre degree
  • Head process for theatre curriculum review and changes including course revisions
Other Duties
  • Enhance and promote the creative output of students pursuing a degree in Theatre
  • Serve as budget director for the program
  • Demonstrate excellence through personal academic and professional growth
  • Represent OBU Theatre in administrative duties and serve as the primary liaison and advocate for the program
  • Mentor and supervise student directors, designers, costume shop and dramaturgs as needed
  • Develop relationships with state and regional high school theatre programs as both a service to their schools as well as a recruitment opportunity
  • Serve as academic advisor to students as assigned
  • Organize, coach, supervise, and travel with students to area conferences, e.g. KCACTF
  Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrated specialization in theatre performance (Acting and Directing)
  • Proven teaching skills at the undergraduate level in both classroom and laboratory environments
  • Proven administrative and artistic skills to manage and advance OBU Theatre, including the ability to work within the constraints of a production budget
  • Possess knowledge of historical and contemporary acting and directing theories 
  • Provide on-going scholarly and creative output
  • Able to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with future and current students, colleagues, and community artists by demonstrating strong interpersonal skills
  • Able to travel, occasionally overnight, for recruitment purposes and to attend professional conferences
  • Able to work some evenings and weekends
  • Able to mentor artistic and academic student projects
  • Preferred: Ph.D. in Theatre or a related field
  • Required: MFA/ABD in Theatre or a related field 
  • Preferred: Experience as an actor and director
  • Required: Higher education teaching experience
